It is very clear that "absence" in human relations is as important to the human mind as presence. So far this has only been written about by psychoanalysts. The mind needs "boredom " and it needs absence to stimulate imagination and, phantasising. A book like this was about the flood of presence by instant communication. I have given copies to friends who never considered this aspect ofcell phones, instant games. The absence of absence, the absence of true original thought.
Innovations are not the same as true genius . Winning an internet game does not involve the many unknown neuronal connection between mind and body. I am a medical doctor who is highly aware of MY "absence" from patients due to the ubiquitous tablet or keyboard, I hope many people read this valuable book ( if they are still capable !)

The Miracle of Sam Michael Harris 9781479775453 Books Reviews
great read this book willmake you rethink things one of the best i've read in a while
I could feel my eyes start to gloss but I never lost interest. A read for those interested in learning what has happened in the time since 1987 but I agree that this interest may fade as we become more accustomed to a life live through our technology.
This is cracking good writing about how the incessant connectedness of digital life has changed the way we think and how it has affected our relationships. The book is deeply thought provoking, and no special experience is required to understand it; most will be able to follow it easily. Several friends I recommended this book to have been effusive in their praise. This would be an excellent book for any book club to discuss.
I was born before 1990, so this book is a wonderful guide to the 21st century. Harris' person anecdotes and analysis is a like reading a tour book. I have watched with dismay as people walk about like zombies attached to their "devices". Harris book explains. I would buy it and Daniel Levitan's The Organized Mind for your survival kits.
Thought provoking journey thru the glut of tech connectivity , its impact on our lives and the price we pay for it.
This is an enormously important book, especially for anyone of our declining (pre-Internet) generation who wishes to understand the rising (post-Internet) generations and why they behave and think so differently. Harris, who has attention-deficit disorder not caused by the Internet addiction he analyzes so brilliantly, is non-judgmental about the addiction's effects as he delivers a vital prescription for everyone affected by it -- be aware of the permanent changes it is making in our neural "circuitry" and the value of retaining our humanity through periods of absence from the Internet.
As a professional writer, I'm always looking for new ideas. This is one.
Writing from another person's perspective is a good author's technique, however writing from an unusual blend of pet and wild animal is outside the box. I enjoyed this manuscript from start to finish, having picked it up on to read during a flight from San Diego to DFW, which I knew would be long and disquieting, like this sentence...
If you enjoy a comfortable read that makes you take a second look at the world around us that often gets ignored, please pick this one up. Read it to your kids. It'll get them once again acquainted with printed material.
